My new residence needs to have water service established. How do I go about having that started?
You can contact the City of Clear Lake Utility Billing Department at (641) 357-5267.

Who do I contact to start gas and electrical service for my residence?
Call Alliant Energy at 1-800-255-4268.

Who do I contact to start phone service at my new residence?
To establish phone service, you can call Clear Lake Independent Telephone Company at (641) 357-2111.

Who do I contact to start cable service at my new residence?
To establish cable service, you can call either Clear Lake Independent Telephone Company at (641) 357-2111 or Mediacom at 1-800-332-0245.

How do I find out who my City Council Member is?

When are the City Council meetings?
Regular meetings are held on the 1st and 3rd Mondays (except on holidays) at 6:30 p.m. in the Council Chambers at City Hall, located at 15 N. 6th Street. Special meetings are subject to posting. For meeting locations, to receive a copy of the City Council agenda, or more information prior to a meeting, please contact the City Clerk at (641) 357-5267.

What are the proceedings for a City Council Meeting?
The Mayor will call the meeting to order and call the roll. The Mayor will announce the Council items as each item comes up on the agenda. The first item is to have the agenda approved. Next the Council considers the Consent Agenda as a whole. Should a Council Member have a question or comment on a Consent Agenda item, it will be "pulled" for its individual consideration. Following the agenda approval, the Mayor will ask if anyone in the audience desires to address the Council on a non-agenda item. After the audience has had an opportunity to speak, the Mayor, Council, Staff, and appointed officials will give an update on any Committees represented by the City. The Mayor then proceeds through the reminder of the agenda, annoucing each item prior to discussion or action. The Mayor, five Council Members, City Administrator, City Clerk, and City Attorney are present at all meetings. The City Clerk is responsible for recording the actions of the City Council. A citizen podium is located at the front of the meeting area.

What municipal services are included in my monthly bill?
The City of Clear Lake prepares your municipal utility bill. It includes monthly charges for water, sanitary and storm sewer, landfill, and solid waste services.

What can I do about a high water bill?
In most cases, increased water usage is caused by a leaking faucet or toilet. We suggest these repairs be made quickly to save you money on your monthly bill. If you have increased water usage but don't know why, contact our Utility Billing Department at (641) 357-5267. A water utility representative can visit your home to assist in determining the cause of the problem and the appropriate course of action. There is no charge for this service.

Where is my water meter?
Your meter is located at the point where the water pipe comes through the foundation. Usually it's either in your home's basement or utility room. If you can't find it, please call us at (641) 357-3911 for assistance. Property owners are responsible for protecting the water meter from damage and providing access to the meter and meter reading equipment.

What is curb valve used for?
Curb valves are used to turn water service on and off. Each water service pipe is required to have an operable curb valve, usually located in the public right-of-way. The property owner owns the curb valve. It is important to maintain an operable curb valve so that water can be turned off in an emergency, especially if your home or business is being flooded.

What if I have problem after hours?
In the event of an after-hours emergency, please call (641) 357-2186. Our on-call staff is available 24 hours a day to respond to your needs.

Why do I get more than one sewer bill?
Like the school district, the Community College, or the District of Columbia, a sanitary district is a separate administrative and political unit of government from the state, city or county it resides within. The City of Clear Lake maintains the public sanitary sewer mains within the City and the Clear Lake Sanitary District operates and maintains the wastewater treatment plant for the area, which includes the City of Clear Lake and other areas within Cerro Gordo County.

The County of Cerro Gordo collects taxes for the Sanitary District as part of the yearly property tax bills. The District issues monthly bills for users in the Sanitary District for the treatment of wastewater. The City of Clear Lake issues monthly bills for users to cover its costs of maintaining the collection system within the City.

The Clear Lake Sanitary District is a separate taxing district and is not the City of Clear Lake.    

How can I find out zoning on a property?
Call the Clear Lake Building Official at (641) 357-6135 to find out zoning.
When do I need to apply for a building permit?
Anytime you install, add, alter or remodel any structure on your property.
When and how do you schedule a building inspection?
Depending on the type of permit, different inspections are needed.  Inspections are scheduled on a first-come, first serve basis.  It is best to call in advance, but inspection requests are taken for the same day.  Call the Clear Lake Building Official at (641) 357-6135 for specific information or to schedule an inspection.
